UKR's four-person Education Department has not been short of things to do. Lydia, Grace, Andrew, and Jack have been running workshops, visiting students at their homes and schools, and meeting with all scholarship recipients as they return to school for Term 2.

What the team is learning is that it’s areas they don’t see day-to-day, those places far off main roads and sometimes inaccessible by car, that present the best opportunity for UKR to make a transformational impact.

Remember our last newsletter about how to build a house? Since then, in only six weeks, dozens of structures are now completed in our Shikoti zone.

UKR worked with a local business to make a long-defunct village well usable, once again.Several hundred people from Eshibutse now have easier access to cleaner water because of this simple initiative. It helps a few UKR families and many of their neighbors in a manner that’s cost effective and suited to the unique needs of a community.

In this post, we will share the story of how a $700 family house is constructed over the course of a few weeks.  We hope you’ll find it as fascinating as we do.

Through novel strategies that reduce water use and promote water retention, many families have learned that it’s indeed practical to manually irrigate a dry season garden. The keys are cultivation in raised beds or sack gardens that use less water, ensuring soil is rich in water-retaining organic matter, and mulching heavily to keep away heat from a scorching sun.

In mid-February, families from the new Shikoti zone went to our Gisambai zone for a benchmarking and learning visit. They returned home with great excitement and confidence that they too will make big changes happen within a very short time.

Every UKR staff member contributes toward making a difference for students and families. But there are also those who consistently go above and beyond, letting their passions shine brightly as they serve.  Congratulations to Humphrey and Millicent! Your efforts are seen and greatly appreciated.

The results are out from December’s high school exit exams, and all 44 of the UKR’s scholarship recipients passed. What’s more, 15 of them achieved results that will qualify for university degrees! Congratulations to all on graduating!

UKR’s new headquarters, inside a building long owned by the organization but only recently renovated, will make it easier for staff to work efficiently and effectively.   Meanwhile, the Gisambai satellite office continues to operate as normal, and another satellite office is likely to be opened later this year as UKR expands into new zones.

The first six youth from our new families joined vocational training programs late last year. The program offers fees and required tools to all interested young people from the families in Family Care.

Immaculate’s interest in nursing was formed during visits to the hospital years ago, when her grandmother was needing care. After she completes her Diploma and secures a job, Immaculate aims to become a nurse in charge, and eventually to work overseas where nursing jobs are in high demand. And one day, she plans to establish her own medical clinic in Kenya.

The eduction team organizes life skills workshops for vocational, college, and university students under UKR scholarships. Typically, the events bring in partner organizations to engage students in their areas of speciality. The most recent workshops, pictured below, focused on the topics of financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and safely navigating online opportunities.
