Farming in the dry season
Through novel strategies that reduce water use and promote water retention, many families have learned that it’s indeed practical to manually irrigate a dry season garden. The keys are cultivation in raised beds or sack gardens that use less water, ensuring soil is rich in water-retaining organic matter, and mulching heavily to keep away heat from a scorching sun.

UKR high schoolers score big
The results are out from December’s high school exit exams, and all 44 of the UKR’s scholarship recipients passed. What’s more, 15 of them achieved results that will qualify for university degrees!

UKR celebrates move into new office
UKR’s new headquarters, inside a building long owned by the organization but only recently renovated, will make it easier for staff to work efficiently and effectively. Meanwhile, the Gisambai satellite office continues to operate as normal, and another satellite office is likely to be opened later this year as UKR expands into new zones.

Meet some of our newest university scholars
Immaculate’s interest in nursing was formed during visits to the hospital years ago, when her grandmother was needing care.
After she completes her Diploma and secures a job, Immaculate aims to become a nurse in charge, and eventually to work overseas where nursing jobs are in high demand. And one day, she plans to establish her own medical clinic in Kenya.

Life skills for college students
The eduction team organizes life skills workshops for vocational, college, and university students under UKR scholarships. Typically, the events bring in partner organizations to engage students in their areas of speciality.
